James Ashton,
born 1859 Britain,
arrived in Adelaide
1884.
The following year he founded the Norwood
Art
School and later, the
Besides
his own fairly prolific output he is well known
for
his connection to two famous artists. He
is the
father
of Sir John Will Ashton and he taught the young
Hans
Heysen. He died in 1935.
His
work is represented in the Art Gallery of South
Holmes-a-Court
Collection, as well as several regional
collections.
There
seems to be quite a few of his works in WA as
many
have come to the market in recent years. His
favourite
scenes whilst visiting WA seem to be the
Swan
All
of the pictures in this collection were obtained from
the
artist direct by the family when he visited them on
his
trips to WA. Unfortunately there
is no precise
record
of these visits that we are aware of but
c.1905
- 1930 is likely.
We haven’t given topographical names to the pictures
unless they were titled on the back.
However, some
are very likely Swan

showing the Narrows,
Kings
Park
and a few other
Swan
Many
also have the framers label of Alman Bros.,
Kalgoorlie.
These
have survived as a collection and have been
passed
down through the family. Purchasers
will be
their
second only owner. ________________________________________________________

LOTS 88 - 101
The
following 14 lots have all been consigned from
The

Webb
is well known for his delicate watercolours and
his
superb prints which seek to define the place he
inhabited.
Janda

publication, 2004, states on the
inside
cover that Webb focussed on, “the river
environment
around his home, ...... the early morning
fishermen,
...... cormorants”, ......etc.,
Also
that, “He chose quiet, still and moody subjects
and
imbued these with a Japanese sense of design
derived
from ukiyo-e prints of the nineteenth century.”
There
is also something of an art nouveau influence
in
the sinuous curves of his trees and overall design.
Together
with J.W.R. Linton he is generally regarded |
