*423.   An Egyptian Black-Mouth Pot

          Predynastic Culture

          Naqada I Period, Circa 4000 - 3500 BC

          Earthenware

Height 31 cm     Diameter 13 cm

          $450 - 650

          Reference:

          F. Tiradritti, “The Cairo Museum: Masterpieces

          of Egyptian Art”, 1998.

          Note:

Pottery is the one artefact which survives most readily

in the archaeological record, it’s broken fragments

being almost indestructible. Black-mouth pots were

produced during the Naqada I period and are

characterized by a dark band around their rim.

The remainder of the exterior surface is coloured red

with haematite, while the interior is entirely black.  This

two-tone effect was obtained by up-ending the pot in a

layer of slow-burning coals.  The lack of oxygen had

the effect of carbonizing the surface, thus blackening

          the clay.

Height 15 cm    Diameter 15 cm

          Note:

Stone vessels, used for the burial of the viscera

removed during mummification, are termed ‘canopic’

jars.  Specific elements of the viscera were placed

under the protection of four anthropomorphic deities

known as the ‘Sons of Horus’.  Each of the four Gods

was associated with a particular canopic jar and its

contents, the lids of those jars being fashioned in the

forms of the heads of each of the four gods.  The

falcon- headed Qebehsenuef protected the intestines.

*429.   (i) An Apulian Squat Lekythos (Italy)

Depicting a woman, her hair gathered in a saccos

Classical Period, Circa 4th Century BC

          Painted Earthenware

Height 12.3 cm    Diameter 7 cm

Provenance: Gallery East, North Fremantle, WA.

          Note:

          (a) Apulia, a Greek city-state in Southern Italy, was a

centre for the manufacture of pottery.  Its vases tend to

fall into two main groups - plain or ornate.  The former

were decorated with simple compositions, many only

with the head of a woman, her hair covered in a

saccos.  A saccos is a piece of fabric that covered the

          whole head like a cap.

          (b) A squat lekythos is a one-handled jug used for both

          oil and unguents.

(ii) An Apulian Red-Figured Skyphos (Italy)

Depicting an Owl between two Olive Branches

Classical Period, Circa 4th Century BC

          Painted Earthenware

Height 7 cm    Diameter (ex. handles) 9.5 cm

          Note:

A skyphos is a two-handled deep drinking cup on a

low flanged base.  The decorations on both the front

and reverse are almost identical.  The owl and olive

branch being symbols of the Goddess Athena.

(iii) An Attic Black-Glazed Kylix (Greece)

Classical Period, Circa 4th Century BC

          Glazed Earthenware

Height 8 cm    Diameter (ex. handles) 17.5 cm

          Note:

          (a) Attic pottery surpassed that of all other centres,

both in its craftsmanship and in the quality of its brilliant

orange-red clay.  Whilst Athens is most famous for its

decorated ware, both black-figure and red-figure, its

potters also produced many undecorated pieces with a

black glaze.  That glaze is usually shiny with a metallic

          tinge.

          (b) A kylix is a two-handled shallow drinking cup raised

on a stem from a foot.

          $400 - 800    (3 items)

*430.   A Centuripe Lekanis with Lid (Sicily)

Hellenistic Period, Circa 3rd Century BC

Earthenware with traces of white, red and blue paint

          Height as Assembled 41.5 cm

          Diameter of Foot 13 cm

Diameter of Bowl (excluding handles) 35.3 cm

Diameter of Bowl (including handles) 54.4 cm

Diameter of Conical Lid 35.1 cm

          $2,000 - 4,000

          Reference:

M.E. Mayo, “The Art of South Italy: Vases from

          Magna Graecia”, 1982.

          Note:

          (a) Centuripe was a city of the Siculi, an ancient Sicilian

tribe.  Located in eastern Sicily, it was described by

Cicero as a prosperous city.  In the 5th Century B.C. it was

Hellenized, adopting Greek customs and aligning itself

with Athens in the Peloponnesian War.  It remained

independent, almost without interruption, until it was

conquered by Rome in the First Punic War.

          (b) This lekanis belongs to a class of Hellenistic

ceramic that was produced in Centuripe during the 3rd

and 2nd centuries B.C.  It consists of three separate

section: (i) moulded foot; (ii) large bowl with moulded

base-ring and two strap handles; and (iii) high conical lid.

The zone between the handles carries a frieze framed

below by a line of bead-and-reel decoration, and above

by the moulded rim of the bowl.  This highly decorative

frieze presents arabesques of foliated scrolls with

flowers and Erotes, and in the centre a Medusa head.

The strap handles are adorned with acanthus leaves at

the point they join the bowl.  Acanthus leaves also

appear at the base of the bowl.  All parts of this

elaborate relief decoration serve as symbols of

immortality.  Indeed the purpose of this lekanis can

only have been funerary, its three separate sections

being a totally impractical arrangement for everyday

          use.

          Length 40 cm

(ii) An almost squared-shoulder blade with a raised

Amlash is a village situated between the Caspian Sea

connect them to a class of blades from that area,

          southwest of the Caspian Sea.

*432.   A Bactrian Chalice (Uzbekistan)

          Circa 2nd Millennium BC

          Carved Alabaster

Height 26 cm    Diameter 14.1 cm

          $400 - 800

          Note:

Bactria was a bronze age culture centred on the upper

Oxus River, known today as the Amu Darya River.

Dated to circa 2200 BC - 1700 BC, it was a wealthy

civilization - the alluvium of the Oxus was fertile

farmland, but also contained gold.  Nonetheless,

neither the origins of Bactria , nor the reasons for its

decline, are understood.  Its distinctive material culture

disappears from the archaeological record a few

          centuries after it appears.

For many centuries prior to the Spanish conquest,

speaking a variety of languages.  This indigenous

culture comprised the culture of the Cazcanes, Cocas,

          Coras, Cuyutecos, Guachichiles, Huicholes, Otomies,

Tarascans, Tecuexes and Tepehuanes.  The upheaval

and displacement experienced by these nations in the

16th Century has made it difficult to identify the

geographical home of some of these native groups.
