$450
- 650
Reference:
F.
Tiradritti, “The Cairo Museum: Masterpieces
of
Egyptian Art”, 1998.
Note:
Pottery
is the one artefact which survives most readily
in
the archaeological record, it’s broken fragments
being
almost indestructible. Black-mouth pots were
produced
during the Naqada I period and are
characterized
by a dark band around their rim.
The remainder of the exterior surface is coloured red
with
haematite, while the interior is entirely black.
This
two-tone
effect was obtained by up-ending the pot in a
layer
of slow-burning coals. The lack of
oxygen had
the
effect of carbonizing the surface, thus blackening
the
clay.

(i) An Apulian Squat Lekythos (Italy)
Depicting
a woman, her hair gathered in a saccos
Classical
Period, Circa 4th Century BC
Painted
Earthenware
Height
12.3 cm Diameter 7 cm
Provenance: Gallery East, North Fremantle, WA.
Note:
(a)
Apulia, a Greek city-state in Southern Italy, was a
centre
for the manufacture of pottery. Its
vases tend to
fall
into two main groups - plain or ornate. The
former
were
decorated with simple compositions, many only
with
the head of a woman, her hair covered in a
saccos.
A saccos is a piece of fabric that covered the
whole
head like a cap.
(b)
A squat lekythos is a one-handled jug used for both
oil
and unguents.

An Apulian Red-Figured Skyphos (Italy)
Depicting
an Owl between two Olive Branches
Classical
Period, Circa 4th Century BC
Painted
Earthenware
Height
7 cm Diameter (ex.
handles) 9.5 cm
Note:
A
skyphos is a two-handled deep drinking cup on a
low
flanged base. The decorations on
both the front
and

An Attic Black-Glazed Kylix (Greece)
Classical
Period, Circa 4th Century BC
Glazed
Earthenware
Height
8 cm Diameter (ex.
handles) 17.5 cm
Note:
(a)
Attic pottery surpassed that of all other centres,
both
in its craftsmanship and in the quality of its brilliant
orange-red
clay. Whilst Athens is most famous
for its
decorated
ware, both black-figure and red-figure, its
potters
also produced many undecorated pieces with a
black
glaze. That glaze is usually shiny
with a metallic
tinge.
(b)
A kylix is a two-handled shallow drinking cup raised
on
a stem from a foot.

Reference:
M.E.
Mayo, “The Art of South Italy: Vases from
Magna
Graecia”, 1982.
Note:
(a)
Centuripe was a city of the Siculi, an ancient Sicilian
tribe.
Located in eastern Sicily, it was described by
Cicero
as a prosperous city. In the 5th
Century B.C. it was
Hellenized,
adopting Greek customs and aligning itself
with
independent,
almost without interruption, until it was

(b)
This lekanis belongs to a class of Hellenistic
ceramic
that was produced in Centuripe during the 3rd
and
2nd centuries B.C. It consists of
three separate
section: (i) moulded foot; (ii) large bowl with moulded
base-ring
and two strap handles; and (iii) high conical lid.
The
zone between the handles carries a frieze framed
below
by a line of bead-and-reel decoration, and above
by
the moulded rim of the bowl. This
highly decorative
frieze
presents arabesques of foliated scrolls with
flowers
and Erotes, and in the centre a Medusa head.
The strap handles are adorned with acanthus leaves at
the
point they join the bowl. Acanthus
leaves also
appear
at the base of the bowl. All parts
of this
elaborate
relief decoration serve as symbols of
immortality.
Indeed the purpose of this lekanis can
only
have been funerary, its three separate sections
being
a totally impractical arrangement for everyday
use.

Coras,
Cuyutecos, Guachichiles, Huicholes, Otomies,
Tarascans,

Gandhara (Pakistan)

Indo-Greek Soldiers
Circa
100 BC - 100 AD
Carved
Schist
Height
30 cm Width 36 cm
$2,500
- 5,000
Note:
(a)
The 1st Century BC saw the construction of
numerous
Buddhist shrines and monasteries, and
the
provision for them of narrative reliefs in stone.
The
most striking aspect of this sculpture is its
Graeco-Roman
features, which stem from the legacy,
firstly,
of Alexander the Great’s invasion of the
subcontinent;
and, secondly, from the cultural and
commercial links
that persisted between Gandhara and
the
Hellenised East.
(b)
Indo-Greek soldiers are occasionally represented
in
the art of Gandhara, such friezes serving as decoration on the pedestals of Buddhist stupas.

A
Collection of Staffordshire Pottery Dog
Figures
The natural resource
of clay around the Staffordshire
region
encompassing the towns of Stoke, Burslem,
Hanley,
Longton and Tunstall, gave rise to a pottery
industry
of over 1,000 firms at its height during the
19th
century.
For this style of
pottery, makers marks weren’t used
and
even the major large firms, such as Spode and |
