Sir Oswald Walters Brierly  b.England 1817; arr. Australia, 1841; d. London 1894

Marine painter and topographer.  Exhibited at the Royal Academy 1839.  Graphic Naval Historian during the Crimean War.  Accompanied the Prince of Wales up the Nile in 1868.  Appointed marine painter to Queen Victoria , 1874.  Knighted 1885.

Represented:  Most state galleries.  Also in major British public and private collections.

Although Brierly was appointed Marine Painter to Queen Victoria , he is collected by Australians because of his association with Australia .

He managed Ben Boyd’s whaling station at twofold Bay for 5 years and joined Captain Owen Stanley on his survey of the Great Barrier Reef and the Southern waters of New Guinea .  He again visited Sydney in 1867 with the Duke of Edinburgh.

In fact, the State Library of N.S.W. recently held an exhibition and published a catalogue of his works.

In 1851 he returned to England .  In 1854, he was commissioned by the Illustrated London News to document the Crimean War whilst serving on HMS St. Jean D’Acre in the Baltic Sea .  ( The subject of this painting).

It was after his return that  he benefited from royal patronage for the rest of his life.

Whilst his work was influenced by the romantic movement, - like  all true marine artists, he was a rigorous observer of detail.

This work clearly shows the flags of the allies during the conflict, British, French and Turkish. (The fourth flag is likely the pennant of a British aristocrat).

These small paddle steamers were very useful in the Baltic, due to their shallow draft and ability to maneuver amongst the ice, and in the tight shallow bays and narrow straits.   (A naval historian could quite likely work out the vessels name).
