Water Precious Water

(The Government well at Bangemall , North West

Australia )

Oil on artist board, signed lower right

48 x 88cm

Estimate:  $1,300 – 1,800

Notes Verso:  This painting depicts two far inland fossickers who would come into Bangemall every fortnight for water and supplies.  “Syd” and “Olaf”, “Blister” the camel and “Nipper” the dog.

Bangemall Hotel consisted of a two roomed mud brick cottage.  Guests wishing to stay at the hotel were expected to erect themselves a tent and stretcher and to dine on “bully beef stew”.

Bangemall was the centre of the Upper Gascoyne Goldfield.

The chief virtue of Bangemall was that it rarely ran out of liquor, was a reliable watering point and a place for friends to meet.

The painting depicts circa 1922.

       Perth circa 1905

          Oil on canvas

          36 x 23.5cm

          Estimate:  $500 – 1,000

In this painting, which we believe was painted Circa 1905, you can see St. George’s Cathedral with the battlement turret (central and to the RHS), the Supreme Court building (far RHS), the Treasury Building (far LHS) and Stirling Gardens (central).  The Weld Club (far LHS) moved to its new location opposite Stirling Gardens in   1892.

The Old Water Police Station buildings were demolished in 1902 for the new Supreme Court building.  The Supreme Court building was built in 1902-1903.  Barrack Square and the Supreme Court Gardens were added in 1903 while the foreshore was extended south into Perth Water.  In 1910 that land in front of the new Supreme Court building had been reclaimed but the gardens had not yet been planted.
