Exhibited Art Gallery of Western Australia, John Campbell Retrospective Exhibition, 2003.
Here, Campbell depicts the well known scene within Freshwater Bay, as well as the building we now know as Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. However, at the time of this depiction the building on Keanes Point was known as Cappoquon House. Built by Edward Keane (1844 1904), a civil engineer and builder, he also built the Fremantle Town Hall. Cappoquon House was later used as a rehabilitation centre for servicemen returning from World War I.
Campbell paints the scene as an idyllic peaceful bay with the tops of the trees lit by the last of the sun. Together with a few recreational sailing boats still out on the river, with a clear view to Point Resolution across the bay. Of interest is the windmill on the far right of the picture and the detailed representation of the boat sheds in the mid ground. Overall this charming picture is infused with the late light of a typical Swan River summers day.

The Trial of Gardiner
Oil on artist board, signed lower right, titled lower left39 x 49cm
Estimate: $12,500 15,000
This is a rare, detailed, narrative, interior scene, by Hart. Also, the subject is unmistakable as the title has been inscribed into the wet paint.
The bushranger Frank Gardiner (1830 c.1890) (Also known as Frank Christie) began his criminal career stealing horses. He later became notorious as a bushranger, particularly when in 1862 he and others stole gold from a stage coach from Forbes. A 1,000 pound reward was offered, - an enormous sum in those days.
When he was eventually captured and tried, he was sentenced to 32 years.
As a model prisoner, he was released after 10 years and then settled in San Francisco where apparently he led an honest life.
He differed from many notorious bushrangers of the era, as he supposedly came from a good family and never murdered anyone.
