1.     J. Swinton Diston  (active c.1890 – 1930)

          Country Scene

          Watercolour, signed lower right

          17.5 x 26.5cm

          Estimate:  $100 - 300

Verso:  Early Inverarity Framing label, Fremantle.

Not much is known of this artist.  However, he must have been quite successful, as many of his  works have survived, which means he must have sold quite a few in the first place.  We know he was in W.A.  because a few W.A. works have “come to light” in recent years.

Illustrated:  “The Colonial Eye” by Barbara Chapman, 1979, p.21.  Interestingly, the original watercolor was recently purchased in London (at great expense) and brought back to Perth.  It shows de Freycinets wife near her husband (she apparently stowed away) who is at the table – perhaps inspecting maps/charts, on the right hand side of the image.  However, in the official journal illustration, she has been omitted.
