This catalogue is dedicated to the memory of the late, Mr. Mario Buongiorno

31/3/53 – 1/2/06.

A well known and long time habituι of our sale room.

Very knowledgeable, with an amazing memory, he collected with a strong passion, particularly historical Western Australian pictures.

Usually sitting in the back row and cutting a distinctive figure in shorts, a reversed baseball cap and long hair. He will be missed by those who knew him.

Oil on board

19.5 x 30cm

Estimate: $300 - 600

Verso: Inscribed "Bunbury Estuary Settlement, Painted by Mr. Futcher"

Note: Bunbury is surrounded by five waterways. The Collie River, the Preston River, the Leschenault Inlet, Koombana Bay and the Indian Ocean. To this you may also add the Leschenault Estuary (further north). These waterways have been subject to extensive land reclamation and the construction of the port. So much like Fremantle, the current shoreline bares little resemblance to what it would be at the time of European Settlement. Having said that, the island depicted in the middle ground could be an island in the inlet that was used to contain livestock.

The Bunbury Historical Society confirm that there was a Futcher family in old Bunbury.

In The Porongurups, W.A. 1935

Oil on canvas, signed lower right

It is Western Australian art folk law that the artist responsible for this work accompanied the well known artists Robert Johnson and A.W. Bassett on a painting trip of the South West during 1935.

This is the only known work to come to market by John Brackenreg depicting this trip, although a number have appeared in the market by the other two.

Besides being a talented painter, who studied under Julian Ashton, Brackenreg was responsible for the W.A. Newspapers Ltd. Art Gallery at Newspaper House, 1933 - 1950.

Later he moved back to Sydney and established one of the pre-eminent galleries of the day, Artarmon Galleries. He became a Fellow of the Royal Art Society in 1954, was granted an MBE in 1962 and an OBE in 1970.

This impressionist painting depicts their caravan and the motor vehicle which towed it. It was most likely painted on the actual site and has the same vibrancy and sense of place now, as it did 70 years ago when it was painted.

It still has the original carved and gilded frame

This is an historically interesting artwork as it depicts the inside of one of the pearling sheds at the end of World War II. The notation "B43" on the centrally located blue box, possibly gives some clue as to the identity of the shed or the lugger from which it came.

54. after J. Alphonse Pellion (active 1817 – 1820)

Nouvelle-Holland, Baie des Chiens Marins camp de l’Uranie, sur la Presque ile Peron (Shark Bay, Western Australia)

Hand coloured engraving

Plate II from the atlas to Louis de Freycinet’s "Voyage Autour du Monde" published Paris 1824

19 x 27cm

Estimate: $850 – 1,200

Illustrated: "The Colonial Eye" by Barbara Chapman, 1979, p.21. Interestingly, the original watercolour was recently purchased in London (at great expense) and brought back to Perth. It shows de Freycinets wife near her husband (she apparently stowed away) who is at the table – perhaps inspecting maps/charts, on the right hand side of the image. However, in the official journal illustration, she has been omitted.

55. John Campbell 1855 – 1924

Perth Railway Station, 1903

Watercolour, signed John Campbell, dated 1903, and inscribed, Perth W.A., lower right

40 x 69cm

Estimate: $20,000 – 30,000

Apparently Campbell considered his main occupation to be, "sign writer and decorator".

In this work he has included his own two advertising signs.

One says, "For pictures of residences commission Mr. J. Campbell, Scenic Artist Perth".

The sign next to it says, "For pictures and scenery go to J. Campbell, Perth".

One of his major patrons, the Swan Brewery, gets the largest sign. Other signs include "Derby Tobacco", the "Hotel Imperial", and "Boan Brothers".

With Campbell’s paintings, the more one looks at them, the more one sees. That is why they are valuable historical records of their time. In the subject work, even the number of the foreground train is recorded, number "199".

He is regarded as a significant artist of his time, as most artists of this period painted landscapes, not the urban environment . However, his work exudes charm, that lifts it above a mere architectural rendition.

His best pictures, like our subject work, contain people, signage, life and lots of detail.
