Taylor said, I
believe that even if you work abstractly,
in
a minimal sort of way, youre still drawing on your
experience
of life the physical business of seeing and
the
more subjective one of feeling.
In reference to his
artistic output, he went on to say,
because
they are simple forms depending on just the
play
of light. In fact, at the
moment Im trying to paint
light.

Piesse
Brook, Kalamunda
Watercolour
Signed

$4,000

Taylor held his
first solo exhibition at Newspaper House
Gallery,
(run by John Brackenreg), in 1949. One
of the
premier
works in that exhibition was,
Bridge,
Piesse Brook, Kalamunda, painted in 1949.
He later commented
that; You miss that half-covered
sky
or the diffused light that you
get in Europe. You
have
burnt-out stuff in the bush; its
harsher country
altogether,
so even if you think like Constable
-----
you
come out here and you cant really paint like
Constable.
The difference
between this first exhibition and the
exhibition
of 1951, was that Taylor began to move away
from
naturalistic colour. He
began to, establish
relationships
between the forms in his compositions with
a
rigorous abstraction. The
subject work dated 1950, is
in
between these first two exhibitions.

equipment
for CY OConnors pipeline to Kalgoorlie

the subsequent delay to the project may well have

Hills
Of Northam 1936
Oil
on canvas board
Signed
lower right

x 45cm
$14,000
18,000
During the mid
1930s Elioth Gruner was considered to
be
one of the continents pre-eminent late impressionist
artists.
As such, the trustees of the Art Gallery of
Western
Australia invited him to come to the state with
the
understanding that they would purchase at least
some
of his local production.
No doubt at the
behest of the young gallery owner and
artist,
John Brackenreg, they toured the South West
and
the Avon Valley region.
With funding coming
from the State Gallerys Hackett
Bequest,
they purchased, The Valley of the Avon,
and
Blackwood River, Bridgetown. Being
an onsite
impressionist
painter, (as to some extent, was
Brackenreg),
he painted other smaller works, of which
the
subject work is one.
Hills of
Northam is very typical of Gruners work at the
time.
Quiet, understated, peaceful and rural.
It is a study in
tone and the use of subdued colour.
The
road leads the viewer into the scene towards the
distant
partly shadowed hills. The
reliable compositional
device
of the diminishing fenceline is put to good use,
adding
to the illusion of distance.
The overall feeling
of the work is that it depicts the late
afternoon,
with diminishing light and lengthening
shadows,
just before the sky begins to turn pink
when
viewed towards the East.

JEWELLERY
Jewellery
items have been inspected by a qualified
gemmologist
and in some cases by external
consultants.
Subject to our normal published
conditions
of sale, jewellery lots are
sold as is.
Historically,
particularly coloured stones, have been
subjected
to treatments such as heating and oiling
to
enhance their appearance. We
assume some
percentage
of stones have been treated.
Carat
weights are estimated via measuring when
stones
are set, so may vary if the stone is unset
and
weighed.
Clarity
and colour gradings, particularly for diamonds,
may
vary between different valuers/appraisers,
particularly
if a stone is graded whilst set and then
regraded
when loose.
Many
jewellery lots are offered with the vendors,
Valuation
Certificates. These
reports are usually for
insurance
purposes. They describe the
item and tend
to
reflect a full replacement price.
It
is accepted that second hand jewellery sold at
auction
normally sells at a discount to these
valuation
amounts.
Where
available, any valuation, receipt or report
can
be
inspected during the pre-auction viewing period.
Whilst
due care is taken McKenzies Auctioneers
does
not warrant that any valuation or
report is
correct.
Prospective
purchasers should satisfy themselves
regarding
all aspects of any auction lots before
bidding.
All
jewellery lots are available for inspection by
potential
purchasers or their invited consultants during
the
pre-auction viewing times.

WATCHES
All
watches are in working condition when accepted
for
sale, however, are sold without warranty.
Watches
are guaranteed to be authentic. For
example,
if
described as an Omega, then the watch is
guaranteed
to be made by that company. This
refers
to
the movement and the case.
However,
sometimes, previous owners may have
customised
their watch by changing the wrist band,
the
front glass or crystal or by adding gemstones,
(such
as diamonds), to the case, bezel or band.
Whether
or not the catalogue entry refers to any
changes,
such additions or modifications do not
constitute
grounds to rescind the purchase contract.
All
watches and timepieces are available for inspection
during
the pre auction viewing period by potential
bidders
or their consultants and are sold strictly as is.
