Linton’s early life was typically Victorian upper middle class.
Occasionally, his father (Sir James Dromgole Linton 1840 – 1916) also
an artist, would dress his children in fancy dress, to use as models for one
of his paintings. The
subject of this work appears to be in a similar vein.
Before arriving in
Albany
in May 1896, J.W.R. Linton
had exhibited with such established groups as; The Royal Institute of Painters
in Watercolours, The Royal Society of British Artists and The Royal Institute
of Oil Painters.

Signed, lower right

Beethoven finished composing his String Quartet No. 14 in C Sharp Minor
in 1826. It is believed Beethoven
considered this his finest quartet and Norman and Rose regarded this etching as one of the
most beautiful of all the etchings.
An alternative spelling for ‘Quartet’ is ‘Quartette’ and
Norman
and Rose used both spellings when titling the edition.
Norman
later described it as one of the most difficult plates to make.
In a letter Lindsay said, “...but I was two months needling that
etching, proving it and regrounding it , half a dozen times to try and convey
the infernal difficulty of space in darkness…”

Estimate: $30,000 –

Inspired by the poem “Geebung Polo Club” by
A.B. “Banjo”
Paterson
”…By the old Campaspe River, where the breezes shake the grass,
There's a row of little gravestones that the stockmen never pass,
For they bear a crude inscription saying, "Stranger, drop a tear,
For the Cuff and Collar players and the Geebung boys lie here.
And on misty moonlit evenings, while the dingoes howl around,
You can see their shadows flitting down that phantom polo ground;
You can hear the loud collisions as the flying players meet,
And the rattle of the mallets, and the rush of ponies' feet,
Till the terrified spectator rides like blazes to the pub -
He's been haunted by the spectres of the Geebung Polo Club.”

Note: In

Mowanjum Community outside
Derby
,
W.A., the Wandjina is the supreme spirit being. The Wandjinas brought the law, culture and language to their
people. Idjair
lives in the Milky Way and is the father of all Wandjinas.
The Wandjina,
Wallungunder was Idjair’s first son, he created the Earth and all
life upon it.
The Wandjina’s facial characteristics can represent many climatic
features. The eyes of the Wandjina can represent thunderstorms and even
cyclones. The bigger and darker
the eyes, the more powerful the Wandjina is said to be. The haloes and lines
around the Wandjina’s face represent different cloud formations and
lightning.
