Linton’s early life was typically Victorian upper middle class.  Occasionally, his father (Sir James Dromgole Linton 1840 – 1916) also an artist, would dress his children in fancy dress, to use as models for one of his paintings.   The subject of this work appears to be in a similar vein.

Before arriving in Albany in May 1896, J.W.R.  Linton had exhibited with such established groups as; The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, The Royal Society of British Artists and The Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
