Named after his wife, Elda . The deep shell shaped body with its comfortable inner leather, shields the seater from their surroundings and gives a degree of sound insulation. The chair has a revolving system of 360 degrees.

333. An exceptional Black Forest , Linden wood,

Bear hall stand. Swiss c.1870

The hallstand models the mother bear clutching the tree with her cub at the top, surmounting an ovular framed and bevelled mirror. The bears having glass eyes.

The hallstand includes a hoop umbrella stand with original drip tray set into the naturalistic base.

Reference: “The Art of the Black Forest , 1820 – 1940”, by; Jay Arenski, Simon Daniels and Michael Daniels.

“ Black Forest ” carvings were the sole province of the Swiss.

(Not German carvers of Bavaria , as the name suggests).

The confusion is because the Swiss marketed their cuckoo clocks as “ Black Forest ” – as they were in a similar style to the German clocks. Therefore all carvings from Switzerland became labelled as “ Black Forest ”.
