        Bear hall stand.  Swiss c.1870

        The hallstand models the mother bear clutching the tree with her cub at the top, surmounting an ovular framed and bevelled mirror.  The bears having glass eyes. 

        The hallstand includes a hoop umbrella stand with original drip tray set into the naturalistic base.

        Black Forest ” carvings were the sole province of the Swiss.

        (Not German carvers of Bavaria , as the name suggests).

        The confusion is because the Swiss marketed their cuckoo clocks as “ Black Forest ” – as they were in a similar style to the German clocks.  Therefore all carvings from Switzerland became labelled as “ Black Forest ”.
