"Earlier paintings had been concerned with the
observable surrounding bush in the hills at Piesse
Brook. A most striking feature at the time for me was the
burnt black remnants of trees and tree stumps, with the
vivid green re-growth in contrast…"

Enter the Magicians, 1927
Etching, engraving, aquatint, soft ground and stipple
Numbered 14, lower left, Edition of 55, lower left
Titled 'Enter the Magicians', lower centre
Signed, lower right
30 x 35 cm
$15,000 - 20,000

"Enter the Magicians" is normally considered Lindsay's
finest etching. (Although "C Sharp Minor Quartet", must
rank a close second).
In a letter to Charles Shepard, Lindsay wrote:
"The Magicians of course, are the artists - the creators,
whose function is to create human consciousness by
revealing life in all its complexities of human passion to
mankind. The figure is still veiled, but the veil is
transparent…"
The dignified figure of the magician, Lindsay said
represents "Creative Art", and the small magician -
who appears less dignified, represents the destructive
element in art.

Explorer and Camel, in Central Australia
Oil on canvas, signed 'Nolan', lower right
180 x 158 cm
$100,000 - 150,000
Verso: Signed and dated 18 March 1984

This 1984 work by Nolan depicts a lone explorer and
camel in central Australia. The Southern Cross above and
what appears to be a representation of Ayers Rock (Uluru)
behind.
Most Australians are familiar with the epic Burke and Wills
expedition of 1860. This event inspired Nolan throughout
his career. It was a theme he first depicted in 1948, and
subsequently returned to with a large number of works
during the 1960's and again sporadically throughout the
following two decades.
The arid unforgiving nature of the landscape, the heat, and
the isolation are all symbolically represented in the subject
work.

Illustrated p.22 Howard Taylor, Sculptures, Paintings,
Drawings, 1942 - 1984 by Gary Dufour
Art Gallery of WA 1985. Catalogue No. 39

"Taylor's major innovation during this period
(1960-67) was the introduction of an actual third
dimension in his paintings. The works occupy the
uneasy zone of perhaps being too painterly to be
strictly considered wall reliefs and containing too
many facets to really be referred to as shaped
paintings.
…'Bush Landscape' 1963, is a good example of the
complexity Taylor was striving for in his representation
of the landscape."
