Tom Roberts (1856 1931)
Portraits
of Mary Anne Welch and Joseph Welch
(c.1892
1893)
Mary
Anne Welch
Oil
on canvas
27.8
x 22.8cm
Mary
Anne Welch was the mother of John St Vincent
Welch,
who was a friend of Tom Roberts. The
subject
came
to Sydney to visit her son after her husbands death
in
1890. According to her
descendant in England,
Roberts
painted her portrait and she was so pleased by it
that
she commissioned one of her late husband, which
Roberts
did from a photograph, cat. 198. This
portrait
was
originally in a wide frame and it was presumably
cut
down some time after (c.1910) and reframed.
The
portrait
must have been executed prior to 1893 when the
subject
returned to England.
Provenance:
Mary
Anne Welch on her death, Joseph Welch (son)
-
private collection, England
Joseph
Welch
Oil
on canvas
27.8
x 22.6cm
This
painting is a companion to the portrait of Mary Anne
Welch.
It is a posthumous portrait done from a photo-
graph
and commissioned by Mary Anne Welch, the
subjects
widow. Joseph Welch died in
1889. This
portrait
could be the same as the one referred to in a
letter
to S.W. Pring, 7 April 1895, which Roberts sent
from
Inverell (Mitchell Library). Roberts
wrote, Please
thank
Welch for his kind message about the portrait it
was
bound to be so a painter needs to be able to form
his
own idea of the subject thats hardly possible with a
photograph.
Roberts was referring to John St Vincent
Welch,
the subjects son, whose portrait Roberts also
painted
when he stayed with Welch in the Blue
Mountains,
cat. 294.
