The
Captain Cook series Hart commenced in 1963.
This artwork was painted in 1968. It falls within the narrative
category of his work.
It
was about this time that Hart’s work became more ambitious. Since getting his start with the Bonython Gallery in
Adelaide
in 1962, his career went from strength to strength throughout the late
1960’s and into the 1970’s both within
Australia
and internationally.
The
Eureka Stockade and Captain Cook series are his most important works from
this period. They were
subjects which were suitable as narratives of
Australia
and as such were eminently suitable for exhibition overseas, which
occurred regularly throughout the 1970’s.

Exhibited:
Most likely, Durlacher’s Gallery,
New York
,
1958
Nolan’s fame is due to his portrayal of Australian historical events
which became legends. Ned
Kelly, Burke and Wills and less well known, the story of Eliza Fraser,
depicted in this artwork.
This series is certainly the rarest of the three.
Shipwrecked on “
Stirling
Castle
”
in 1836, Captain Fraser, Eliza, and a few of the crew, reached the shore
of an island (now named
Fraser
Island
).
The men were all killed by Aborigines whilst she was enslaved by them.
Later, the escaped convict, David Bracefell rescued her.
Nolan’s paintings of this episode tend to depict more of Bracefell (as
the convict), rather than Mrs. Fraser.
In this work, Nolan communicates the despair and alienation of Bracefell
hiding in the
Queensland
rainforest.
Ultimately, Bracefell was betrayed by Fraser after he rescued her;
although he did escape again.
The first Mrs Fraser paintings were completed by Nolan in 1947, but he
returned to the theme a number of times over the following decades.
During 1957, Nolan commenced a new group of pictures about the Eliza
Fraser and Bracefell story. The
Whitechapel Gallery,
London
, at the time, held a retrospective exhibition for him.
In late 1957 and early 1958, he lived in
Paris
whilst
studying printmaking.
From June 1958 to April 1960, he was in the
United States
on a Harkness Fellowship and worked in
New York
and
Arizona
.
New York
’s
Durlacher Gallery held an exhibition for him at this time.
Therefore, from interpreting the inscriptions on the back of the painting
and looking at Nolan’s itinerary at the time, it can be surmised the
picture travelled from
Paris
to the exhibition in
New
York
.
Whilst this work was painted a long way from
Queensland
,
Nolan did visit
Fraser
Island
for the purpose of coming to terms with its natural environment, to work
as inspiration for the series.
Here, the dense, dark rainforest envelopes the convict who is almost
completely hidden except for his striped convict clothes.
On the right of the picture plain, a jungle flower rises up.
Enveloping that is a flourish of cream paint which makes a bold
abstract mark on the paint surface.
Besides balancing the picture, it no doubt alludes to some sentiment the
artist wishes to communicate.
